STC-India "Awareness session on Technical Communication/Writing" at IEC, Greater Noida

Event Update
Date: Aug 31st, 2013
Number of Participants: 500+ (highest ever students in any such event)
Speakers: Madhumita Sharma (Safenet) and Rajeev Jain (Rightster India)

After six successful events in Delhi-NCR based engineering and management colleges this year, STC India Education (Rajeev Jain and Madhumita Sharma) travelled all the way from Gurgaon and Delhi to reach the venue which was almost 75 km away. Since STC-India team reached much before the time, they got the opportunity to meet the IEC group president, Mr R L Gupta and the director of the IEC group, Dr Singh. Mr Gupta showed keen interest in exploring the possibilities of introducing technical communication at IEC University, near Chandigarh.

After having coffee with STC-India team, Mr Gupta accompanied them to the auditorium. The session started around 11.30 am with a formal opening ceremony by Mr Gupta. We were expecting around 150+ students for the seminar but we were surprised to see almost 500+ students in the jam packed auditorium. Rajeev Jain started the session by informing students about the importance of:
·         Technical Communication
·         Career Vs Job
·         Understanding the corporate expectations

During the session, Mr R L Gupta got so involved that he himself stood up and encouraged students to reply back and make best use of the interactive session.

Rajeev shared examples of famous Bollywood movies like Bhag Milkha and 3-idiots. As expected, not many students were aware of technical communication or technical writing but still many students showed keen interest in this profession. Madhumita shared her experiences of working as a writer and some of the key challenges faced by her. She also shared different job opportunities available for the technical communicators.

During the interactive session, students asked many questions such as:
1. Skill set required to start a career in this field.
2. Job opportunities in this filed
3. Difference between a technical writer and a content writer.
4. The importance of creativity and ideas in this profession.
5. Growth opportunities in this profession.
6. How technical communication can help them in other fields like construction and real estate.

The entire show was managed quite well by team of around 15 volunteers. There were some logistic challenges and electricity kept all the volunteers on their toes. Madhumita and Rajeev also braved through all such challenges and kept the students engaged during those forced breaks. After having lunch with volunteers and faculty, STC-India team left from college around 3.00 p.m.

Feedback
The college management shared instant feedback and informed us that the students were extremely happy and they found the session to be very good, interactive, and useful. The students wanted more sessions from the STC-India education team. College management also showed interest in conducting another event for their MBA students at IEC University, which is almost 300 KM away from Delhi. They have also asked for proposal to explore the possibilities of introducing this course at their University.

Thank you Note
STC-India team would like to thank all the students, volunteers, Mr R L Gupta, Dr Kulneet, and Supriya for providing us the opportunity to present this session and all the arrangements.
